Almond Housing Association are looking at what practical things we can do to help as the cost of living and energy prices continue to rise. Customers have told us that they are worried about the impact this will have on heating their homes and feeding themselves and their families.

Our office is not as busy as it used to be, so we are repurposing our reception area to create ‘The Big Living Room’ which will be a warm, comfortable space for the community to use free of charge. We are finalising details with West Lothian Foodbank and from late October The Big Living Room will be their Craigshill distribution centre. This will support easier access as it minimises the distance local residents need to travel to collect food.

Local people can use the Big Living Room space to meet a friend or come and read a book. There will be food available as well as hot drinks and activities to participate in. Our communities have a number of fantastic projects and we are working with the existing groups to use this space to provide sessions on Energy Advice, Welfare Benefits, cooking sessions and reuse and mend sessions.

We will have thermal curtains, energy efficient microwaves, pressure cookers and kettles, winter duvet and bedding sets, and winter coats and footwear available for those in need. Customers can also collect items such as toiletries provided by local charity Dignity Boxes, Winter Ready Energy packs and recipe bags through our Growing Together Project.
